The Rock And A Hard Place - 1596 Words
Between a Rock and a Hard Place seems to be quite an appropriate title for this HBO documentary whose executive producer and star is Dwayne ââ¬Å"The Rockâ⬠Johnson. Young men with serious criminal charges and significant prison sentences are provided a second chance by participating in the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Departmentââ¬â¢s Boot Camp Program in place of serving their entire prison sentence. Dwayne Johnson greets 38 cadets starting the program, lectures them on their opportunity and asserts that he wants the world to see the importance of the program. Lastly, he tells them bluntly, not to ââ¬Å"â⬠¦f**k this up.â⬠(Rock and a Hard Place). The documentary covers the support the program supplies for its participants through the various exercises, counseling sessions, classes and work opportunities. The program offers each of these benefits at different phases. The documentary presents each participant in a way that it is difficult not to find some way to relate to each of them and to even care for them or their sense of purpose. Notably, the program appears thorough with its design to offer support systems and provides various means of addressing potential obstacles of a cadetsââ¬â¢ success, such as lack of education, lack of support from family, anger management and substance abuse. Even so, a viewer cannot help but question some of the harsh treatment. For example, in the beginning you are introduced to two young men who struggle with understanding the English commands that a drill instructor is barking at them. Later within the documentary, these same cadets are taken aside and told they are expected to work harder to overcome the challenge of not understanding English. Towards the end one cadet ends up breaking down sobbing because he fails one of his critical tests towards graduation, due to the language barrier. Though there are classes to help the participants learn to prepare for a GED, there are no tools to helpShow MoreRelatedThe Rock And A Hard Place1482 Words à |à 6 Pages Between a Rock and a Hard Place seems quite an appropriate title for this HBO documentary whose executive producer and star is Dwayne ââ¬Å"The Rockâ⬠Johnson. Holiday Trip free essay sample
Travelling has always been my hobby. I used to travel to many places back in Malaysia. To me, travelling is the best way to understand human nature besides to discover many things that I am not exposed to before. In fact, seeing new places, new landscapes, meeting new people, and learning about different culture are all the great benefits that I get from travelling. For my first winter break in the US, the first place I went to is the famous city of Las Vegas. It is a great place for people who are fond of a city life. I did not go there for gambling. Instead, I went there to attend the annual gathering for Malaysian and Indonesian (MUKTAMAR) which is an Islamic event held to get to know new people as well as to listen to some knowledge talks. During this event, I get to meet my Malaysian friends who are studying at different universities all over the US. Having went to the excellent places in Las Vegas, my friends from Stevens and I went for a road trip around California and Nevada. The first place we visited was the great architectural marvel, Hoover Dam, which is located on the border between the US states ofà Arizona and Nevada. It is amazing that as we pass through the bridge, there will be two different time zones-Pacific, which is the time zone in Nevada and Mountain which is the time zone for Arizona. We manage to take many beautiful pictures there before continuing our journey to the great Grand Canyon. It was a long and tiring journey from Las Vegas which took us almost eleven hours to reach our hotel at Grand Canyon. On the next day, despite the cold atmosphere, we went out early to witness the beauty of sunrise in the early morning. We managed to reach the Grand Canyon National Park exactly before sunrise. The view is breathtaking and stunning. We walk around and took more pictures for about an hour before we went for hiking along South Kaibab trail to ââ¬Å"Ooh Aah Pointâ⬠which is a distance of about 2500m. It was tiring but worth the time and energy as we could see amazing landscape during the hiking. On the next day, we went to the City of Angels, Los Angeles. We settled there for three days before went back to Las Vegas to catch our flight at the Las Vegas Airport. On the first day in LA, we went to the ââ¬Å"Hollywood signâ⬠,à a landmarkà andà American cultural iconà in the Hollywood Hillsà area of Mount Lee, Santa Monica Mountain. All this time, I can only see it in the movies. It feels so great that I got a chance to see it real close. Again, we took many pictures at the place with the ââ¬Å"Hollywoodâ⬠sign in the background. On the following day of the trip, we took a walk along the Walk of Fame in Hollywood Boulevard. We also manage to visit the Kodak Theater. This is a place where many splendid and grand performances from famous and well-known celebrities such as Celine Deon and Christina Aguilera took place. In addition, this place became the avenue for many television shows and important ceremonials and events for instance, the Cirque Du Soleil Iris, American Idol and The Oscar Academy Awards Ceremonies. We also went to Beverly Hills where many movies were shot such as the famous Beverly Hills Cop movie. On the last day, we went to Universal Studio Hollywood. It was the best theme park I have ever visited in my life.

Women of the Harlem Renaissance Essay Example For Students
Women of the Harlem Renaissance Essay The movement was known as the New Negro Movement coined by Lain Leroy Locke in 1925. The New Negro was a term related to African Americans during the Great Migration who had moved from the south to northern cities in the United States in search of better education, employment, and suffrage. The New Negro was utilized o describe African Americans as artistic, conscious and sophisticated, as opposed to the stereotypes of African Americans being innately servile. The Harlem Renaissance was known as having a militant edge. The era acted as a celebration and development of the intellectual achievements of African Americans. This period was utilized to recreate the Black identity through varied mediums: music, literature, visual art, and entertainment. We will write a custom essay on Women of the Harlem Renaissance specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The Harlem Renaissance also sparked the notion of the New Negro Woman, relating to women poets, authors and intellectuals, known for heir race conscious writing. Women in the Harlem Renaissance played a vital role as the voice for the struggling minority of African American women. African American women utilized the movement to express their views on race and gender relations. The women poets of the Harlem Renaissance faced one of the classic American double-binds: they were black, and they were female. To the general reader, the poetry of the Harlem Renaissance is more than likely embodied in the work of two or three writers like, Claude McKay or Longboats Hughes. But apart from these literary arks there are also other works by women writers that seek attention, acknowledgement and respect. This work includes poems of homespun wit and sophisticated irony; of family, politics, and existential unease; of love, betrayal, and heartache; of racial pride and world-weariness. In addition, they carried the burdens of the race: self-consciously creating a literature for a people only recently out of slavery; not writing anything that could be construed as revealing, embarrassing or humiliating, not only to African Americans as a group and themselves as individuals, nor anything that deviated from he constrained Victorian social patterns in which all women in our culture found themselves living at that time; and, perhaps most crushing of all, being obligated to write in ways that proved blacks and black women were as literate and articulate, as capable of education and cultivation, as whites. These burdens grew out of the expectations of the Renaissance, or the New Negro Movement. As Lain Locke, one of the pioneering theorists of the movement, wrote in his seminal essay The New Negro, the writers of the Renaissance would Join musicians , actors and dancers and visual artists in educating the world in true African American capability: The especially cultural recognition that they win should accompany any considerable further benefit of race relationships. Things did not quite work out that way. The lives and careers of poets such as Jessie Redmond Faucet, Secondly Bennett, and Georgia Douglas Johnson have, in the history that has been written since, been relegated to the precincts of specialists in African American literature. Yet, the achievements of Faucet, Bennett, Johnson, the other women poets of the Harlem Renaissance stand among the most heroic in the twentieth century American poetry. Jessie Redmond Faucet was born in 1882 in New Jersey. She grew up in Philadelphia and considered herself an O. P. (1 Old Philadelphia). Faucet became a central force in the Renaissance, nurturing and encouraging many young writers. Thought of during her career principally as a novelist, Faucet wrote delicate, if somewhat stiff to modern ears, formally structured verse. In the foreword to her novel The Chicanery Tree, she defined her goal as to represent the breathing-spells, in-between spaces where colored men and women work and love. Historian David Levering Lewis concludes that for honesty and reciprocity, Jessie Redmond Faucets influence on the Harlem Renaissance was probably unequalled. There is no telling what she would have done had she been a man, given her first-rate mind and formidable efficiency at any task. Faucets close friend was Georgia Douglas Johnson-?the only woman of the Harlem Renaissance actually to publish a collection of verse (publishing three between 1918 and 1928). Born in 1880 in Atlanta, Georgia, Johnson herself struggled to make a living in the years after her husbands death, and to send their two sons to college. A 1928 swapper article written about her states that her great fear w as that she would not be able to accomplish her artistic goals, for, although she works incessantly her time is too much taken up with making a living to give very much of it to literary work. She worked a series of Jobs-?as a librarian, schoolteacher, federal bureaucrat -?and applied unsuccessfully for a number of literary grants until late in her life, which male counterparts were far more likely to obtain. She was a prolific writer, also producing drama and music, but worried greatly in her later years about the work he left unfinished. Her poetry is concerned with themes of romance and racial identity; though her most moving verse, certainly from our perspective today, spoke to issues of female identity and freedom. .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06 , .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06 .postImageUrl , .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06 , .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06:hover , .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06:visited , .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06:active { border:0!important; } .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06:active , .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06 .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2810f4a6be7273d4e111497f0bdcea06:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Renaissance, Its Impact on English Literature EssayIn one of her best-known poems, The Heart of a Woman, she writes, The heart of a woman falls back with the night, / And enters some alien cage in its plight, / And tries to forget it has dreamed of the stars, / While it breaks, breaks, breaks on the sheltering bars. Secondly Bennett was born in Giddings, Texas in 1902. Raised firmly in the black diddle class, Bennett traveled widely, writing formally controlled, image-rich poems about literary forebears, pan-African solidarity, and the beauty she found in African American people and creativity, something of a novel position at the time. Actor and never quite got it back t o writing. l sailed in my dreams begins Fantasy, one of her poems, and it is both moving and inspiring to think of a woman courageously traveling, seeing, thinking these things-?illuminating other possibilities, even if they were not able to be fully lived at that time-?a time when black women ere trapped in such stereotypes as Mamma domestics or mindless, bobbed flappers dancing at the Cotton Club. Faucet, Johnson, Bennett, and their New Negro peers Anne Spencer, Marital Bonnier, Helene Johnson, Angelina GrimmÃâà ©, and Alice Dunbar-Nelson, among others, presented a vibrant, living image of richly-dimensioned interior lives; of complex, ambivalent emotions towards love, work, and home; nuanced social concern and historical consciousness; the highest degree of education and attention to craft; and a most UN-feminine (by the standards of the time) desire for notoriety and literary achievement. Much can be made of what their work is not; much more should be made of what it is, given the context of a time when black women held arguably the lowest position in society. These women would inspire with their example three generations of poets who had a much greater chance to realize their artistic ambitions-?most directly Margaret Walker, author of the Yale Prize-winning For My People, and Secondly Brooks, the first African American to receive a Pulitzer Prize; and through them a younger generation of poets more able to completely explore their poetic selves and many of the same tensions and issues.

Cool Things to Do With Dry Ice - Chemistry
Cool Things to Do With Dry Ice - Chemistry Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide. It is called dry ice because its frozen, yet never melts into a liquid. Dry ice sublimates or makes the transition directly from frozen solid into carbon dioxide gas. If you are lucky enough to get some dry ice, there are lot of projects you can try. Here are some of my favorite cool things to do with dry ice. Homemade Dry Ice - First you need dry ice, so if you dont have any, make it! Dry Ice Fog - The classic project is to put a chunk of dry ice in hot water, causing it to produce clouds of vapor or fog. Dry Ice Crystal Ball - Place a piece of dry ice in a bowl or cup containing bubble solution. Wet a towel with bubble solution and pull it across the lip of the bowl, trapping the carbon dioxide into a giant bubble that resembles a crystal ball. Frozen Bubble - Freeze a soap bubble over a piece of dry ice. The bubble will appear to float in the air over the dry ice. Fizzy Fruit - Freeze strawberries or other fruit using dry ice. Carbon dioxide bubbles become trapped in the fruit, making it fizzy and carbonated. Singing or Screaming Spoon - Press any metal object against a piece of dry ice and it will appear to sing or scream as it vibrates. Dry Ice Ice Cream - You can use dry ice to make instant ice cream. Because carbon dioxide gas is released, the resulting ice cream is bubbly and carb onated, sort of like an ice cream float. Dry Ice Bubbles - Place a piece of dry ice in bubble solution. Fog-filled bubbles will form. Popping them releases dry ice fog, which is a cool effect. Simulate a Comet - Simulate a comet using dry ice and a few other simple materials. It will even produce a tail like a real comet. Dry Ice Jack-o-Lantern - Make a cool Halloween jack-o-lantern that spews dry ice fog. Dry Ice Erupting Volcano Cake - While you cant eat dry ice, you can use it as a decoration for food. In this project, dry ice produces a volcanic eruption for a volcano cake. Dry Ice Bomb - Sealing dry ice into a container will cause it to burst. The safest version of this is to place a small piece of dry ice into a plastic film canister or potato chip can with a pop lid.Inflate a Balloon - Seal a small piece of dry ice inside a balloon. As the dry ice sublimates, the balloon will blow up. If you use too big a piece of dry ice, the balloon will pop!Inflate a Glove - Similarly, you can put a piece of dry ice into a latex or other plastic glove and tie it closed. The dry ice will inflate the glove. Dry ice is a lot of fun to play with, but it is very cold, plus there are other hazards associated with it. Before attempting a project involving dry ice, be sure you are aware of dry ice risks. Have fun and be safe! Dry Ice Facts | Dry Ice Science Fair Projects

Children with special needs in Australia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Children with special needs in Australia - Essay Example Most of the times, children with special needs from all over the world are deprived of education. It must be realized that they too need education as much as, or even more than, the children without special needs do. They need this education for the following reasons. Equal Right to Education. It is said that ââ¬Å"education prepares individuals to be self-reliant and self-sufficient participants in societyâ⬠(Rothstein & Johnson, 2010, p. 69). Children with special needs are already unable to do many things due to their handicap. They need to have, at least, the basic education to lessen instances of untoward further deprivation of ââ¬Å"social, economic, intellectual, and psychological well-beingâ⬠in the future (Rothstein & Johnson, 2010, p. 69). Their case, however, require a more intense educational techniques and strategies for them to reach their full potential. Improve their Focus. Normally, children are easily distracted. Children with special needs more often have worse cases. They lack focus and are inattentive most of the times (Bainbridge, n.d.). Special education instructors are packed with different ways to deal with this inattentiveness that can improve their focus while they are taught with reading and solving math problems (AutoSkill, n.d.). Many other academic progresses are told to be seen in children attending special education. Interaction. Being as they are, children with special needs are continually facing social issues that deny them the chance to interact with other people (Hart, 2009). When children are put in a classroom with other children with or without disabilities, they will be able to learn ways on how to react on different situations with other people. Children with special needs interacting with other children with special needs will improve their self-worth by seeing that their differences are accepted and it is fine to be who they are. On

Operating System Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Operating System - Assignment Example Thirdly, it ensures that there is as little as possible the amount of damage that errant programs are likely to cause. Therefore, the protection mechanisms are either tools or procedures for the enforcement of the security policies while protection policies encompass what is allowed and those that are prohibited, while using a computer system (Whitman & Mattord, 2009). An access matrix is a protection security model which contains columns representing varied system resources; and the rows representing varied protection domains. Implementation is executed with reference to: domain, objects and rights entries. The model uses a lock-key mechanism where each resource is linked to a unique lock (bit patterns). Each domain has a specific bit pattern known as a key. Access is only granted if a domain key fits a resource lock. Moreover, modification of its own keys is not allowed. Every column of the table is kept as an access right for the specific object in order to discard blank entries. Every row is maintained as a list of a domains capability (Whitman & Mattord, 2009). The capabilities lists cannot be directly accessed by any user or by the domain because they are protected using a tag and an address space which can further be segmented. Based on Whitman & Mattord (2009) a computer virus is a program-code that attaches itself to an application so as operate concurrently while the application is running. A worm is a program that replicates itself in order to consume the hostââ¬â¢s genetic code and mechanism. A virus attaches itself to a particular file or an opened program while a worm exploits the weakness an operating system or an application in order to duplicate itself. A virus relies on user(s) so as to spread the infected programs or files to other computer devices while a worm uses networks to duplicate itself to other computer devices without the help of user interventions. Designing The Perfect Leadership Development Experience Education Essay
Designing The Perfect Leadership Development Experience Education Essay Leadership development is improving the qualities of leadership. This can be achieved by Planned and systematic efforts (Groves, 2007 cited in Amagoh, 2009). Leadership development programme is similar to the learning organization concept which focus on facilitating change, empowerment, knowledge sharing, opportunities for learning development and promotes leadership development. (Amagoh, 2009) Nowadays companies struggle with leadership development. They send the top performing employees to attend few leadership development workshops seminars and expect the participants to be the leaders in a week or so. This does not work as expected since personals have different characteristics and abilities. National wide financial have found four kinds of people who engage in this type of development programmes. They are reluctant leaders who have all the necessary skills to be a manager but not confident that they would be effective leaders. Second type is arrogant leaders who believe they have all the leadership skills but lack those skills. Third category is unknown leaders who have the right leadership skills but since they are not good at developing relationship, they fail to be selected as effective leaders. Finally the workaholics which we come across very often (Griffin, 2004). In my individual leadership development programme I have to first identify myself among the four types. Even though occasionally I have played the role of a leader, it makes me to think whether I could be in a leaders position of an organization? This more sounds like a reluctant leader. Initializing the development programme can be based on major leadership traits, which are intelligence, self-confidence, determination, integrity and sociability. Intelligence Studies found that leaders have higher intelligence compare to non-leaders (Zaccaro, Kemp and Bader, 2004, cited in Northouse, 2007). Intelligence helps in solving the critical problems effectively. I believe intelligence partly come from birth and partly by continuously involved in activities which could boost it. This can also be acquired by observation. Self-confidence This is one area which I focus to improve that in turn will help in chairing an organization. Leadership is all about influencing the followers in order to achieve the vision. Self-confidence is necessary to assure that the way leader influence is appropriate. Determination This includes initiative, persistence, dominance and drive (Northouse, 2007, p. 20). Determination will direct the followers in a desirable path in order to achieve the vision. Integrity This refers to honesty and trustworthiness. Developing the integrity skills will enable confidence in others, which in turn enables delegation, and thereby followers feel ownership and motivated. Sociability Leaders one of the main tasks is to develop and maintain relationships within and outside the organization. Therefore, skills such as being friendly, outgoing, courteous, tactful and handling issues diplomatically are essential to be an effective leaders. Stevens, (n.d. p.42) says managers wear square hats and learn through training. Leaders wear sombreros and opt for education. Some of the learning through education to become an effective leader are understating, generating ideas, questioning, looking for processes rather than content, initiating strategies, long term focus, risk taking, open minded, skill of imagination, etcà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ therefore the leadership development programme should highlight the above aspects. Bennis, (2009,) says on becoming a leader the first thing is to identify is knowing yourself. He has also identified four lessons of self-knowledge (Bennis, 2009, p.52) You are your own best teacher Accept responsibility. Blame no one You can learn anything you want to learn True understanding comes from reflecting on your experience I would say the basic mantras for me to become a leader will be the above four lessons. I would also use integrated solution approach and some other common senses. Integrated solution approach This includes eight steps (Weiss and Molinaro, 2006, cited in Amagoh, 2009). Developing a comprehensive strategy for development Designing the development activities according to organizational and global challenges. For example, compare to the earlier days the social interaction among different nationalities are a must in order to perform as an effective leader. Being in Dubai, in a routine basis we would meet around 180 nationalities where each of them are different. According to Bennis (n.d., cited in The emirates center for strategic studies and research, 2002) the new leadership should understand and practice the power of appreciation, keep remind the people of what is important and generate sustain trust. Use the leadership stories. This is one of the excellent learning which I consider. Reading and understanding different leaderships styles and world-class leaders way of leading will help in enhancing the skills of leadership. Understanding both global and local individuals needs. Using emergent design and implementation will also enable development. Understanding the culture. Focusing on critical moments of leadership life cycle. Applying a mix of methodology will enable development. On top of the above, importance have to be given for personal growth, understanding the concepts, learning through feedbacks and mistakes, skill building, etcà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ will also enable development (Allen and Hartman, 2008, cited in Amagoh, 2009). In answering, How would you know it was effective, I would say if the leadership effectiveness is achieved, it is obvious that leadership development plan was effective. And on the other hand we should also understand leadership development is not one time learning rather it is an ongoing learning process. Therefore, any inefficiencies or neglected skills once identified can be learned. The way we do business around the globe has changed in past dramatically and it is also evidence that the change is continuing. To cope up with the challenging dynamic world leaders has to continuously sharpen their skills. One of the example which I would quote is the professional organizations like CIMA (UK) and ACCA (UK) have introduced programmes called CPD (continuing professional development) to keep members connected with the current and changing world. Leadership effectiveness can be defined as successfully influencing followers in order to achieve the organizational vision (Vardiman et al, 2006; Bodinson, 2005 cited in Amagoh, 2009). Effective leadership is one of the competitive advantages of an organization. In addition, the effective leader determines the organizational performance and growth who are expected to establish vision and strategies, maintain relationship and manage change in order to ensure the organizational growth and survival within the competitors. In conclusion, leadership development programme has to be designed by considering various aspects and skills needed to be an effective leader. In addition, continues progress monitoring and identifying lacking skills will enable to plan the next step of the development programme. We should also understand and accept the fact leadership development is not a one time learning but it is a lifelong learning. Sangeeven
